Google Business Profile calls: why your best leads leak, and how to catch them
The "Call" button on your Google listing sends you some of the highest-intent leads you'll ever get — a customer who tapped your name off the map. It's also one of the easiest places to lose them. Here's why those calls leak, and how to catch them.
For a lot of home-services businesses, your Google Business Profile — the listing that shows up on the map and in "near me" searches — is quietly your busiest salesperson. Someone searches "plumber near me," your pin comes up, they tap Call, and your phone rings. No website visit, no form. Just a tap and a ringing phone.
Those are about the best leads you can get. The caller didn't stumble in — they looked for exactly what you do, right now, near them, and picked you off the map. And they're also some of the easiest leads in the world to lose.
Check your call history — it's usually a shock
Here's a five-minute exercise that changes how most owners think. Google shows you, right in your Business Profile, how many calls your listing drove — and, for many profiles, a history of those calls. Go look. If you're like most busy operators, you'll find calls in there you have no memory of answering. Not because you ignored them — because you were on a job, driving, or asleep when they came in.
That number is your leak, in black and white. Every one of those unanswered taps was a customer who wanted you specifically, in the moment, and didn't get through.
Why Google Business Profile calls leak worse than most
All missed calls hurt, but the ones from your Google listing leak especially fast, for a few reasons baked into how people use the map:
- The competitor is right there. On the map, your pin sits next to two or three others. A caller who doesn't reach you doesn't have to search again — they just tap the next pin. Switching to your competitor is one thumb-tap away.
- It's mobile and impulsive. These calls come from a phone, mid-task, often on the move. There's no patience for voicemail and no second attempt — they're working down the list of results.
- They come at all hours. "Near me" searches happen at 10pm and on Sunday morning, exactly when nobody's at a desk to pick up. The map never closes, so neither can your phone.
How to stop the leak
Getting the calls is the hard, expensive part — that's your reviews, your ranking, your years of good work showing up on the map. Catching them is the part you can actually fix quickly:
- 1See the real number first. Look at your Business Profile's call data so you know how big the leak actually is. You can't manage what you haven't measured.
- 2Make sure every tap-to-call gets answered — live if at all possible. The caller chose you; the only job is to be there when they do. A caller who reaches a real answer never has to look at the other pins.
- 3If a call does slip, text back within minutes. They won't leave a voicemail, but they'll reply to a text — and a fast text back can pull them out of the map before they've booked someone else. (Here's how missed-call text-back works.)
- 4Cover it 24/7. Because the map searches don't keep business hours, neither can your answering. Nights and weekends are exactly when these high-intent calls come in.
The theme is simple: you've already paid — in effort and reputation — to earn a spot on that map. Letting the calls it sends you go to voicemail is spending all that to make the phone ring and then not picking up. (We put numbers on that in what a missed call really costs.)
Where June comes in
June answers the calls your Google listing sends you — live, 24/7, in your business's name — books the job in the moment, and texts back any caller she couldn't reach in time. So the highest-intent leads Google hands you stop leaking into your competitors' pins and start turning into booked work. The hard part (getting found) is done; June makes sure you don't lose it at the last tap.
