Do customers call back if you miss their call?

You figure they'll try again later. Most of them won't. Here's what actually happens after a caller doesn't get through — and why you rarely get a second chance at that first call.

You see the missed call at lunch. You figure you'll call them back after the job. They needed a plumber — they'll wait, right?

Most of the time, they won't. That homeowner already called the next number on Google. By the time you dial back at 4pm, they've got someone booked for tomorrow morning.

This isn't speculation. The data on what callers do after a failed first attempt is clear — and it's worse than most business owners assume.

What actually happens after a missed call

A 2025 Nextiva survey of 400 consumers found that 56% of people switch to a different company or channel on the first failed attempt to reach a business. Not the third. The first. Over a quarter — 28% — walk away from the purchase entirely.

Think about what that means for a three-person plumbing shop. If you miss five calls this week (a slow week for most), at least two or three of those callers are already gone by the time you see the notification. Not gone to voicemail. Gone to your competitor.

56% of callers switch to another business after a single failed attempt to get through. They're not leaving voicemails. They're leaving.

Why they don't try again

It's tempting to think the caller is being unreasonable. You were on a ladder. You'll be free in twenty minutes. But from their side, the math is obvious:

  • They have a problem right now — a leak, a dead AC unit, a tripped breaker. Waiting feels risky.
  • Google gave them five options, not one. Calling the next number costs them nothing.
  • Your voicemail told them nothing — not when you'll be free, not whether you even serve their area. So they move on.
  • They don't know you're good. They haven't hired you yet. There's no loyalty to wait on.

From the caller's perspective, a missed call isn't a minor inconvenience. It's zero information. They don't know if you're busy, closed, full, or out of business. The rational move is to try someone else.

"But I call them all back within an hour"

You might. And sometimes that works — especially for non-urgent stuff. But for the calls that matter most (emergency repairs, first-time callers, people with an active problem), an hour is already too late.

The same Nextiva study found that phone callers expect a response within about five minutes. That's the expectation — not the grace period. After five minutes, you're already behind. After an hour, the research shows your odds of qualifying that lead drop sixty-fold.

And here's the part that stings: the callbacks that *do* connect often feel fine. The customer answers, you book the job, everything works. But you never see the callbacks that don't connect — the ones where the number goes to their voicemail because they already booked someone else and stopped answering unknown numbers. Those just look like "no answer" in your call log, and you move on without knowing you lost a job.

The calls you lose are invisible

This is the worst part. A bad review is visible — you know you lost a customer. A callback that ends in a booking is visible — you see the win. But a missed call from someone who quietly hired your competitor? That never shows up anywhere. There's no angry email. There's no one-star review. There's just... silence.

Which means most owners dramatically underestimate how many leads they're losing to missed calls. The real cost of a missed call isn't just the one job — it's the lifetime value of a customer who would have come back for years, but never got started.

What actually fixes this

The only reliable fix is to never let the call go unanswered in the first place. Not a faster callback system. Not a better voicemail greeting. An actual live pickup — every ring, every time, including when you're mid-job or asleep.

That's the entire point of June. She answers your business line live, 24/7, in your business's name. Talks to the caller, captures their details, books the job. The caller never hears a voicemail, never hangs up wondering if anyone's there, and never has a reason to call the next number.

Nobody has to be won back, because nobody was sent to voicemail.
